KNX Systems for Architects and Designers

You design the space. We engineer the automation inside it. If you are specifying building automation for a residential or commercial project, this page explains when to involve us, what we deliver, and how we collaborate.

What we provide to your team

We function as a specialist subconsultant within your project team. You get structured deliverables, direct communication with the engineer, and coordination with the electrical contractor.

Early-stage coordination

We join during schematic design to define what is realistic within the project scope. You get a feature matrix and budget range to discuss with your client before committing.

Technical specifications

Functional spec, KNX topology, device schedules, and wiring schematics. Everything the electrical contractor needs to install the bus cable and devices correctly.

Lighting design integration

We coordinate KNX lighting control with your lighting designer. DALI integration, scene definitions, dimming profiles, and switch/panel placement aligned with the interior concept.

Structured system planning

Device locations, conduit requirements, distribution board space allocation. Structured documentation compatible with BIM workflows and standard construction packages.

Why specify KNX

Open standard

500+ manufacturers, 8,000+ certified products. No vendor lock-in. Your client can change integrators without replacing the system.

Design-grade interfaces

Touch panels from Ekinex, Basalte — glass, metal, custom finishes. Flush-mount or surface-mount. The technology disappears into the interior.

Wired reliability

Dedicated bus cable, no Wi-Fi dependency. Systems installed 20 years ago still run. No batteries, no signal issues, no forced obsolescence.

Expandable

New rooms, new features, new integrations — added to the existing bus. The system grows with the building.

When to involve Virasmart

The earlier you involve us, the better the outcome. KNX infrastructure needs to be planned alongside electrical design — not retrofitted during construction.

Project phaseWhat we deliver
Schematic designFeature scope definition, budget range, feasibility assessment. Materials for client presentation.
Design developmentFunctional specification, device selection, touch panel placement, wiring requirements for electrical design.
Construction docsWiring schematics, device schedules, conduit requirements, distribution board layout coordination.
ConstructionInstallation quality verification, device commissioning, ETS programming, on-site testing, client handover.
Post-occupancyScene adjustments, schedule tuning, system expansion. Available to your client long after construction.

What to include in your specification

You do not need to be a KNX expert. Include the following in your design intent, and we handle the technical engineering.

1

Room functions

For each room: lighting control, climate, blinds, audio, security. We translate this into a device list and KNX topology.

2

Interface preferences

Wall-mounted panels, keypads, or app-only control. Preferred manufacturers or finishes (Ekinex, Basalte) if relevant to the design concept.

3

Integration scope

HVAC brand/model, intercom, audio system (Sonos, Trivum), CCTV, access control. We verify compatibility and plan integration paths.
